Chile has an extraordinary biogeographic diversity, with destinations as distinct as the Atacama Desert, the Mediterranean Region, the Temperate Rain Forest and the Patagonian Steppe. Because of the geographic isolation created by the Andes Mountain Range, the desert and the Pacific Ocean it is a country with unique ecosystems and great numbers of endemic species. The scientific community has recognised large parts of Chile as a hotspot of international importance for the conservation of biodiversity (Myers et al. 2000).

Chile has 460 species of birds,150 species of mammals, 107 species of reptiles and roughly 6.000 species of vascular plants. In some of these groups the level of endemism is high, for example in the Chilean Mediterranean Region more than 50% of the species of vascular plants are endemic.

NATURALISTA is dedicated to designing and guiding unique birdwatching, marine mammal watching, natural history and photography excursions.

All of our programmes have been carefully designed in order to guarantee that participants experience the biodiversity of Chilean birds with a special focus on endemic species. With this in mind we have chosen ideal sites for encountering Chile’s impressive natural richness by visiting breathtaking places like wetlands (e.g. lagoons, estuaries, bogs and more), foothills, river canyons, high altitude Andean habitat, coastal areas and forests. Several of these sites have already been declared Ramsarsites of International Importance, Natural Reserves and National Parks.

On our excursions participants will encounter phenomenal species like the Andean Condor, the Diameded Sandpiper Plover, the Grey-hooded Sierra Finch, the Coscoroba Swan, the Many-coloured Rush Tyrant and the non-to-be missed, spectacular and endangered Burrowing Parrot among many others. Participants will be delighted with Chile’s unique and truly spectacular endemic bird species such as the: Moustached Turca, White-throated Tapaculo, Chilean Mockingbird, Chilean Tinamou, Crag Chilia, Slender-billed Parakeet and more. They also will marvel at the fascinating Chilean marine fauna, including: the Humboldt Penguin, the rare Southern Sea Otter, Southern Sea Lions, and various whales and dolphins.

Without a doubt, our excursions are unique opportunities to learn about native flora and fauna, to have an adventure, and to enjoy the beauty and magic of nature.

Our company provides the highest quality service. Experienced local guides lead the excursions. All programmes include comfortable vehicles, excellent food and smoothly executed logistics.

In the following section you will find a list of our programmes with details about each destination, itineraries, and a list of possible species.
